TROPHY WATCH - ARCHIVE - MARCH 2008

Todd Collick, WY 2007
Pronghorn Paradise in Wyoming
March 28, 2008

Wyoming's Walk In Area program, which is a program designed to provide public hunting on private lands, is reportedly what enabled Todd Collick to harvest this great pronghorn. It was green scored at 87-2/8, and could be one of the larger pronghorns taken in Wyoming last fall.

Willy Morton, BC 2007
BC Muleys in the Rut
March 28, 2008

Willy Morton scored big on what he reports as his second deer ever. Taken near Chase, British Columbia, this buck was only about 40 yards away and in full rut when Willy took him with a shot from his .30-06. He reports the deer may score in the high 180s.

Tom Hoffman, MX 2008
Sonora Trophy Mule Deer With A Bow
March 28, 2008

Tom Hoffman was hunting in Mexico this past winter and took the mule deer of a lifetime - and with a bow. This buck looks like it has a great chance to make B&C's minimum entry requirements. Mexico continues to put out some incredible mule deer, especially in the past ten years.

Jason Boyett, OK 2007
New Oklahoma State Record Whitetail
March 28, 2008

Jason Boyett was hunting in Pushmataha County last November when he brought down a buck for the ages. This buck, scoring 191-4/8 and just accepted into B&C on March 27, 2008, is the new Oklahoma state record typical whitetail. The former record, scoring 185-6/8, was taken by Larry D. Luman in Bryan County in 1997.

Jason's deer has a gigantic typical frame, scoring 210-4/8 net. The buck also had 19 inches of abnormal points, meaning Jason had the choice to enter the buck as either a 191-4/8 typical or a 229-4/8 non-typical. Bryan chose the typical score, which favorably places the buck as a true all-time great in the typical category.

Ben Kozak, WI 2007
Wisconsin Teen Bags the Big One
March 28, 2008

Ben Kozak was hunting his home state of Wisconsin when he took this great typical whitetail. Scoring 162-7/8, this 6x7 rack easily qualifies for the Awards Program minimum of 160.

Ben's trophy buck was accepted into B&C's 27th Awards Program on March 18, 2008.

Joe Lacefield, KY 2007
Kentucky Whitetail Fever
March 20, 2008

Official Measurer Joe Lacefield took this nice 7x7 buck in his home state of Kentucky this fall. He reports a gross score of 147 and a net score of about 137. Over the past decade, Kentucky has surged toward the top of the list of trophy-producing whitetail destinations.

Jason Jensen, MX 2008
Wide Mexico Muley
March 20, 2008

Jason Jensen took this tremendous typical mule deer in Mexico this season. The buck reportedly gross scores near 212.

The record for typical mule deer taken in Mexico is 210-2/8 (net). That buck, taken by Myra Smith in 2006, received the First Award for typical mule deer at the 26th Big Game Awards in summer of 2007.

Jim Ratcliffe, MT 2007
Montana Moose Qualifies for the All-Time Book
March 20, 2008

Jim Ratcliffe downed this great Shiras moose in Mineral County, Montana this past fall. Scoring 160-4/8, this moose easily surpasses the 155 All-time minimum.

Jim's moose was accepted into B&C's 27th Big Game Awards Program on January 23, 2008.

Suzan Ramage, TX 2007
A Mature Texas Whitetail
March 20, 2008

Suzan Ramage sent us this photo of a great buck she took in Texas recently. She says, "This is an example of a mature Texas buck - he is approximately 7-1/2 years old."

Baler Stewart, OK 2007
Oklahoma Black-Eyed Pea Thief Taken by Nine-Year-Old
March 18, 2008

Rumor is that the hotwire wrapped in this giant buck's antlers was to protect a garden from intruding deer. It obviously didn't work. This buck, taken by nine-year-old Baler Stewart, is reported to have nearly 40 points and score near 220.
The Oklahoma state record for non-typical whitetail is a 247-2/8 buck taken by Bill M. Foster in Johnston County in 1970.

Mike LeBlanc, LA 2007
First Time Hunt in Louisiana Nets a Wallhanger
March 14, 2008

Mike LeBlanc has always been an avid duck hunter, and was just recently invited to go on his first deer hunt. This great buck was the result. He reports the deer had 14 points and scored 149-1/8.

Hunter Slyfield, WA 2007
Hard Scouting Pays Off On A Washington Sheep Hunt
March 14, 2008

Eighteen-year-old Hunter Slyfield beat tremendous odds in drawing a California bighorn tag for the Clemens Mountain area in Washington. He made the most of his opportunity, taking this great trophy ram on opening day following 13 days of hard scouting.

Frank Noska, KS 2007
A New Home for a Kansas Whitetail
March 14, 2008

Official Measurer Frank Noska, from the frozen tundra of Alaska, took his annual pilgrimage to Kansas for whitetails and connected on this fantastic 8-point. It was the only buck he was interested in that came within bow range all season.

Bobby Beeman, AZ 2007
Arizona Trophy Bull for Bobby
March 14, 2008

Bobby Beeman, who already has the claim to fame of holding the Wyoming record for non-typical whitetail (261-5/8), took this great bull lately in his home state of Arizona. The bull has just been officially scored at 378-7/8 - good enough for the All-time Records Book. B&C's All-time minimum is 375; the three-year Awards minimum is 360.

Alex Barton, AB 2007
Canada Has Big Pronghorns, Too
March 7, 2008

Alex Barton took a fantastic pronghorn this past September near Cessford, Alberta. With both horns surpassing the 17-inch mark in length, this is truly one of Alberta's great pronghorns.

If accepted at its 85-6/8 entry score, this buck would be tied for 5th on Alberta's provincial list. The provincial record, taken by Fred J. Streleoff near Manyberries in 2003, scores 88-4/8.

Nevada, 2007
Nevada Sagebrush Bull
March 7, 2008

This giant bull seems to stand out easily in the low sagebrush country where he was taken. No word yet on the hunter, but it may have come from unit 231 in Nevada.

Lance Wasniewski, MN 2007
Minnesota Droptine Trophy
March 7, 2008

Lance Wasniewski arrowed this giant droptine buck in December of 2007, on his birthday. Dean Birkeland submitted the photo, and noted that Minnesota could have many more field photos of bucks like this if they would restrict the buck harvest. He could be right. Minnesota was a true heavyweight in whitetail entries up until about 1980, at which point entries have trailed off significantly.

Kurt Rued, MT 2007
Montana Open Country Moose
March 7, 2008

Kurt Rued made the most of his Montana moose tag in 2007, downing this giant in September. Scoring 160-7/8, it also has a 51-1/8 greatest spread.
The Boone and Crockett Club cameras were on location to film this hunt for the Club's television series, Leupold Big Game Profiles, which will air later this year on the Outdoor Channel being in July.

Wyoming leads the list in total Shiras moose entries, with 328. Montana is second with 164, followed closely by Idaho with 163.

Mark Deibert, AK 2007
Yet Another Big Alaska Goat
March 7, 2008

Mark Deibert took this records book billy near Deer Mountain, Alaska in October 2007. Scoring 53-2/8, this goat is one of the top-ranking goats entered thus far in the 27th Big Game Awards Program. Mark endured some terrible weather and passed on several good billies before taking this one-in-a-lifetime trophy.
