TROPHY WATCH
February 9, 2010

Trophy Watch™ is a segment of Boone and Crockett Club's website dedicated to highlighting the more significant or interesting big game trophies taken recently across North America, as well as trophies entered and accepted into the B&C records. Rare or outstanding photos pertaining to native North American big game are also often posted.  It is a great venue to showcase fair chase trophies, debunk myths, separate fact from fiction, and to solicit the truth in regard to popular but often incorrect or incomplete emails mass circulating on the internet.

Only photographs taken in good taste and showing respect for the animals hunted will be posted.  Occasionally, in the interest of clarification and secondary to the lack of access to better photographs, Trophy Watch may post pictures that would otherwise be deemed suboptimal (below the standards required for inclusion in other B&C publications).  Trophy Watch will exercise options to technologically change and improve the acceptability of a photograph if needed.  For helpful tips on taking memorable field photos, click here. B&C does not endorse or support any person, persons or trophies featured on this site.

If you have a newsworthy item (please include photo and details) or if you have specific information relating to a Trophy Watch™ posting, please submit a detailed e-mail to tw@boone-crockett.org. It is understood that images submitted to Trophy Watch are being provided for the purpose of electronic publication and full permission and authority is granted with such submission. Trophy Watch assumes no responsibility for the accuracy of information provided by others.

Note:  Due to time and space restraints, not all photos can be posted.

Michael Fairleigh 2009
Kansas mule deer
February 8, 2010

Michael Fairleigh found this buck the opening day of rifle season in Scott County, Kansas. It is reported to green gross score 231-1/8.

If entered and accepted, Michael's buck would be the largest B&C typical mule deer from Kansas. There are currently 12 typical mule deer entered into B&C from Kansas.

Roger A. Gunlock 2009
Alaska Grizzly
February 8, 2010

UPDATE Roger Gunlock's trophy grizzly bear has been accepted into the 27th Awards Program at 24-2/16 B&C.

Roger Gunlock hunted the Wrangell Mountains near Chisana, Alaska, and took this grizzly with an unofficial score of 24-2/16.

The three-year Awards Book minimum for grizzly is 23 points for the Awards book, and 24 points for the All-time records book.

Carlton Madison 2009
Indiana Shotgun
February 8, 2010

Although Carlton Madison has been taking good bucks in Kentucky for many years, he recently began hunting southern Indiana, with excellent results! This buck came from Perry County, IN and is reported to have a green gross score of 174-5/8. It is the first buck Carlton has taken with a shotgun.

If entered and accepted, Carlton's buck would be the first B&C typical whitetail entry from Perry County, Indiana.

Lisa Banasick 2009
Keystone State Non-typical
February 3, 2010

Lisa Banasick made good with a rare Pennsylvania elk tag by taking this non-typical bull reported to green gross 405-1/8. The bull was taken on 11/5/2009 from Cameron County.

Lisa's husband, Erik submitted the photo with a note that he secretly had entered her name in the drawing.

If the score holds, Lisa's bull would be the new #2 from PA behind a bull taken in 2006 that scores 425-2/8. For sure, this would be the largest bull (typical or non-typical) from PA taken by a female hunter.

Brian Stephens 2009
Buckeye Muzzle Longest Beams Ever
January 31, 2010

UPDATE: 1/31/2010 Trophy Watch recevied word that this buck was scored on January 30 by two Offficial Measurers.
The final non-typical score is 250 1/8" Gross - 232 5/8" Net on 18 scoreable points. The buck has the two longest main beams ever recorded on a whitetail at (Left) 35 1/8" & (Right) 34 1/8". The buck also has a 17 7/8" G2 tine. While Boone and Crockett does not keep records by method of harvest we cannot confirm but this buck is reported to be the muzzleloader record non typical from Ohio

12/14/09 Stephens reports "It unofficially has the longest
main beams ever recorded at 35 1/8" and 34 1/8" green. It will likely set a new mark for non-typical in OH with a Muzzle Loader." The longest main beams on record (non-typical whitetail) are from another Ohio buck scoring 209-1/8 taken in 2008 (Right 33-6/8, Left 32). Longest main beams for a typical whitetail are from an Indiana buck taken in 1985 scoring 195-5/8 (R 33-6/8, L 33-1/8).

Brian Stephens of Clayton, Ohio with a buck taken on 11/30/09 with a muzzleloader. Unofficial green gross of 249-5/8, netting 232-1/8.

Wisconsin 2009
400 Pounds
January 29, 2010

This big guy has been speeding around the Internet faster than the 14 foot brown bear that terrorized the Alaskan Peninsula, killed five, ate a helicopter and took 30 rounds to bring down a few years back.

400 pounds? Maybe. Taken on a Game Farm and Hunting Preserve in Wisconsin.

Shawn Sampson 2009
New Brunswick First
January 29, 2010

UPDATE: The entry score on this trophy is 209 4/8 points. We are awaiting the arrival of some material needs to proceed with acceptance.

B&C Official measurer, Bill Hanson, measured this bull taken by Shawn Sampson near Napadogen, New Brunswick. The bull scores 205-4/8 and is the unofficial new provincial record (Unofficial until entered and accepted at this score). This was Sampson's first moose tag and bull.

The current N.B. record is a bull scoring 202-2/8 that was taken in 1972. This would be only the third Canada moose on record from New Brunswick

Mike Versland 2009

Mike Gatlin 2009
High Cutters
January 20, 2010

UPDATE: Mike's pronghorn has been accepted in the 27th Awards at 82 4/8 points

B&C Official Measurer, Lance Gatlin submitted this photo of a buck his father, Mike had just taken. This is rare example of pronghorn where the D-3, third circumference, measurement would most likely be taken below the prong. More typically, this measurement lands above the prong, but with this buck's horn length and high prongs, its final score will benefit from a larger 3rd (D-3) quarter circumference encompassing more horn mass below the prong. Green score is 82-2/8.

Tracy Atchison 2009
Kansas Blackpowder
January 20, 2010

The last day of the '09 Kansas muzzleloader season produced this unofficial 230-inch non-typical for Tracy Atchison.

Fond du Lac, WI
Big WI Non-Typical Whitetail
January 18, 2010

UPDATE: Wayne F. Schumacher's entry materials have been received and accepted at 243 6/8 points non-typical

Wayne Schumacher of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, took this incredible non-typical whitetail with his bow Sunday, September 20th. Some have speculated that the score may be high enough to surpass the current WI record (247 3/8) from Vernon County. Fond du Lac County has 9 entries with the largest being a 207 7/8 Non-Typical taken in 1956. The buck has to dry 60 days before we can expect to see an entry, verify the information, and report on how this buck stacks up in a state known for big whitetail bucks.

Wisconsin 2008
Combine Bear
January 14, 2010

Early reports reported this big bruin was hibernating in a Wisconsin cornfield when he was hit and killed by a farmer's combine. Facts that have surfaced have confirmed that the bear was hit by a combine, but dead before impact from a poacher's bullet. The rest of the story goes further downhill from there.

The DNR said the bear weighed over 700 pounds. Also, a B&C scorer has reported that he has been contacted about scoring this boar for the DNR. B&C will accept illegally taken game only if it is owned by a state agency and entered on behalf of the citizens in that state.

Chase Rosson 2009

Dear B&C,
I thought I’d send you a photo for Trophy Watch consideration. This is my son Chase, 12 at the time, who shot his first deer during his first hunt on Halloween this past season during the Missouri Youth Hunt. He used his great-grandfather’s .300 Savage. I’m not sure which of us was more excited. Definitely a “trophy” in my book.
