Jim Martell, NT 2006
Grolar Bear - The World's Newest Species
May 15, 2006

When Jim Martell headed north for a polar bear hunt, he naturally expected any white bear from the north country to qualify. After he downed his prize, joy turned to confusion and worry after seeing the bear had characteristics of a polar bear as well as a grizzly. DNA tests would later confirm that the animal Martell had shot was indeed a grizzly/polar bear cross, born of a grizzly father and polar bear mother. It is believed to be the first such documented case in history of such a consumation taking place in the wild. Authorities intend to allow Martell to keep his truly unique trophy.
