Mark Utter, NJ 2005
A Victory for Sustainable Use and Conservation
January 27, 2006

Conservation is the wise use of natural resources, not the elimination of all use. New Jersey has for years had a huntable and sustainable black bear population, but anti-hunting sentiment there kept sportsmen from being able to enjoy the bounty. Sportsmen's efforts to reinstate New Jersey's bear hunt were successful, and shown here is an example of the fruits of that labor.
Mark Utter harvested this 745-lb. bear on December 10th, 2005. The bear was aged at 12-15 years old. It was one of two bears on the hunt that tipped the scales past the 720-lb. mark.
