Thomas E. Gannon 2009
CO Conservation Success
December 28, 2009

According to the Colorado DOW dating back to the early 1900s moose were spotted on the Grand Mesa National Forest. Early settlers hunted moose on the Grand Mesa until they were depleted. The Grand Mesa Moose Reintroduction program started in 2001 with actual animals being relocated to the Grand Mesa in 2005.

The 2009 Colorado hunting season offered 2 bull moose tags on the Grand Mesa and my Father (Thomas E. Gannon) was lucky enough to draw one of them. This was the first moose killed by a fair chase hunter on the Grand Mesa in nearly 100 years! It was shot with a .50 caliber muzzleloader.
