The “Wild Horse Island Ram” is the world’s record bighorn sheep that roamed Wild Horse Island State Park in Flathead Lake, in western Montana. This massive ram died of natural causes, and its horns were picked up by personnel from Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks. Not only does this ram have the largest horns ever known to exist on a bighorn sheep, but to my eye, they are some of the most beautiful.
Being an artist, I am drawn to the beauty of the curl, the flare, and the mass of this particularly pleasing set of horns. Such massive horns are the result of quality habitat, and Wild Horse Island is unique because it has some of the last remaining natural Palouse Prairie. A remarkable conservation success story, the island has provided over 500 sheep for reintroduction efforts in Montana and other states. With any luck, those bighorns on Wild Horse Island will continue to thrive and grow other sheep populations across the West.
