Scoring Lessons $5 Each From B&C

Hunters can now learn to score North American big-game species for $5 per trophy type. For the first time, individual chapters of the official Boone and Crockett Club scoring manual are being offered as electronic PDF files.

Previously, only complete published copies of "Measuring and Scoring North American Big Game Trophies" were available.

"This manual is the definitive source for info on the Boone and Crockett Club scoring system. But, over the years, we’ve had many inquiries from hunters who didn't want to buy the whole book because their interests were focused solely on one species. Some hunters are devoted to whitetails, for example. Other hunters had just drawn a bighorn sheep tag and just wanted to learn as much as possible about sheep before their hunt of a lifetime. Now we can accommodate hunters who don’t need the whole book, just a specific chapter," said Julie Tripp, director of publications for the Club.

The 12 chapters now offered as individual electronic files include:

• Deer, whitetail
• Elk, American, Roosevelt’s and tule
• Goat, Rocky Mountain
• Moose
• Musk ox
• Pronghorn
• Sheep
• Walrus

Chapters are $5 each and available for immediate download as ZIP folders with e-book PDF files, plus separate folders with official scoring charts that correspond with the texts. No special hardware is needed to view these files but a free copy of Acrobat Reader is required. This software can be easily downloaded over the Internet if needed.

The entire publication also is available as a PDF file for $15, which is less than half the cost of the printed book.

"Measuring and Scoring North American Big Game Trophies" was published in 2009 as a third-edition paperback with 176 pages, how-to procedures, score sheets and dozens of illustrations. Included are chapters on Club policies related to fair chase, score shopping, party and proxy hunting, damaged and/or repaired trophies, escape-proof fencing, trophy entry procedures and many other trophy-related subjects. Authors include Dr. Philip L. Wright, William H. Nesbitt, Dr. C. Randall Byers, Eldon L. “Buck” Buckner and Jack Reneau with input from the Club’s 1,100 official measurers. Boone and Crockett developed its scoring system to measure the success of conservation and management programs across North America. Official data dates back to 1830.
