State-by-State Rankings for Boone and Crockett Trophies

Ask a hunter to guess America’s top trophy-producing states, and they’re likely to pick western states. After all, states with the biggest varieties of well-managed big-game populations—and thus more species to hunt—are bound to produce more trophies, right? Not necessarily.

Newly compiled state totals of Boone and Crockett Club trophy entries (since 2017) reveal a Top 10 list featuring an even split between five western states and five midwestern/eastern states.

Wisconsin, a state with only whitetail deer and black bear in the newest records data, ranks number one overall with 505 total entries. Alaska, which has black, brown and grizzly bears, Sitka blacktail deer, walrus, mountain goats, musk ox, bison, Dall’s sheep, Alaska-Yukon moose, barren ground caribou and Roosevelt’s elk, comes in at number two with 457 total entries.

Other states in the Top 10 include Colorado, Ohio, Arizona, Indiana, Montana, Wyoming, Kentucky and Minnesota.

See the full list of rankings for all states and provinces below. Compiled trophy data represent the Club’s 15th Awards Period—2017 through 2022—and all months since then through June 2024.

Most of these recent specimens are included in Boone and Crockett’s newly published Records of North American Big Game, 15th Edition. New editions are printed every six years. The 15th Edition adds more than 4,500 new entries across 38 categories of North American big game. Included is the latest World’s Record bighorn sheep.

In total, the 15th Edition contains over 36,000 records for sheep, deer, elk, bear and other species. First published in 1932, the book has grown to two volumes with over a thousand pages. Along with detailed, tabular trophy listings, including harvest locations (down to county level), it features hundreds of field photos, score sheets, and insightful chapters. It’s available in paperback, a hardback collector’s set with slipcase, and a deluxe limited edition.

“When hunters mention a trophy that could ‘make the book,’ this is the book they’re talking about. It’s one of the most important collections of historical data for today’s hunters as well as conservationists and game managers,” said Kyle Lehr, the Club’s director of big game records. Lehr said infinite trophy trends can be discovered and tracked in Boone and Crockett records. Conservationists can use the data to help gauge habitat and population management programs over time. Hunters can use the data to help plan their next hunt for the trophy of a lifetime.
